01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Choose a fish-focused set lunch or gather around a hot pot in the evening. Unkai is a Japanese restaurant with meals suited to different times of day and occasions. Diners have mentioned the changing lunch specials, including a seafood rice bowl with bamboo shoot tempura and a set meal of sliced raw tuna. One reviewer noted that the tuna, which had quite a few sinews, had been scored to make it easier to eat. The daily-changing menu gives seafood fans something to look forward to at lunchtime.

One diner found the conger eel tempura set meal substantial; rice and miso soup could reportedly be refilled once at no charge. Another lunch paired a seafood rice bowl with rolled omelette, with both described as generous portions. For a satisfying fish-centred meal, it is worth checking what the day’s lunch menu offers.

In the evening, diners can order à la carte or choose an omakase kaiseki course of 10 dishes featuring seasonal ingredients. It brings together items such as sashimi, grilled dishes and tempura, making it an option for a group keen to sample a range of foods. One visitor ordered grilled kué collar alongside sashimi, fried chicken and tofu salad, and remarked on the collar’s size and how well it would go with white rice. These were separate orders, but the meal suggests one way to centre dinner on fish while adding smaller dishes and chicken.

Unkai’s signature collagen hot pot comes in Japanese-style, salt and Sichuan flavours, with tomato and curry also available. The tomato and curry versions require advance reservation. A hot-pot course includes sashimi, rolled omelette, seasonal dishes, a seafood assortment with the hot pot, and a finishing dish. Choosing the hot-pot flavour helps shape a meal for a group to share. Private rooms and all-you-can-drink options are also offered.
